Structured cabling for commercial buildings
Structured cabling means an application-neutral infrastructure that carries telephony, data traffic, building services and security systems together. It is organised into primary, secondary and tertiary subsystems – from the building entry point through the floor distributors to the outlet at the workstation. Cabling is arranged in a star topology: every outlet runs directly to the distributor responsible for it. That uses more cable initially, but it is the only topology that can be tested and documented to the standards and narrowed down within minutes when a fault occurs. Cascades of switches that have grown up under desks cannot do that.
Standards, categories and acceptance
Network cabling design is based on DIN EN 50173 and ISO/IEC 11801, which define the requirements for structured cabling systems and transmission links. Installation is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 50174-2, including requirements for cable bend radii, earthing and bonding, and the separation of power and data cabling.
For new copper installations, we typically specify Category 6A components and Class EA transmission links. Class EA is specified up to 500 MHz and supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over channel lengths of up to 100 metres.For connections between buildings or over longer distances within a site, we specify fibre optic cabling instead of copper.
Every installed cabling link is individually tested, and the test report is included as part of the acceptance documentation at no additional charge. This provides a documented baseline for the installation and clear evidence if faults or disputes arise later.
Networks in offices
In an office building, the number of outlets per workstation drives the design – two data outlets per desk is usual, plus spare capacity for later alterations. Meeting rooms need connections for conference equipment and displays, and print areas need their own ports. Where flexible desk-sharing concepts apply, we deliberately increase outlet density, because extending the installation in an occupied building costs more than providing spare capacity at the outset.
For wireless coverage we position access points according to floor area, wall construction and user density rather than on an even grid, and each access point gets its own link. Critical routes between floor distributors are duplicated where the risk justifies it.
Networks in retail
In retail, turnover depends directly on the network: tills and payment terminals, Wi-Fi for staff and customers, cameras, access control and electronic shelf labels. Many of these devices are powered over PoE, which affects both cable routing and distributor design. For multi-site estates we define a single standard so that every new branch is built to the same pattern and the rollout stays predictable. Combined with our electrical installation for shopfitting, both trades come from one supplier.
Server rooms and distributors
Floor distributors and server cabinets are planned around port count, heat load and access. That includes cooling or ventilation, tidy patching, consistent labelling of outlet, cable and patch panel, and the documentation that actually helps when something fails. A cabinet whose labelling no longer matches reality after two alterations costs time at every incident.
Uninterruptible power supply
Critical network nodes are protected by a UPS: server and distribution cabinets, till systems, safety-related equipment and controls in production. Sizing follows from a single question – which systems have to keep running, and for how long: long enough for an orderly shutdown, or until a standby supply takes over. Frequently asked questions
Which category do I need – Cat 6 or Cat 6A?
For 10 Gigabit Ethernet over channel lengths of up to 100 m, we specify Cat 6A components and Class EA transmission links, rated up to 500 MHz. For new installations, we generally use Cat 6A to provide sufficient capacity for future applications.
Will I receive test reports?
Yes. Every installed cabling link is tested individually. The test report forms part of the acceptance documentation and records the original condition of your network. You receive it together with the as-built plan and distributor documentation.
Can you install while the site remains operational?
Yes. We work in sections, outside peak hours or at night. This allows retail and office operations to continue with minimal disruption, while your staff do not need to take on any installation tasks.
Do you also provide electrical installation?
Yes. Electrical installation and data network cabling are provided from a single source. This reduces coordination between trades and helps avoid interface issues with cable routes and distribution points.
How long does installation take for one branch?
That depends on floor area, outlet count and access. We confirm a firm date once the survey is complete.
